Prior to Grey's Anatomy, he made several television appearances, earning him an Emmy Award nomination. He has also recently appeared in several films, including Sweet Home Alabama, The Emperor's Club, Freedom Writers, Enchanted, Made of Honor, and Valentine's Day.
